Protean Steel is owned and operated by Toby Sticpewich, who has over twenty years experience designing and building custom metal work. He studied design at the University of North Texas, where he was chosen to apprentice with the metal sculptor Richard Davis. After university Sticpewich worked as a journeyman in a wide range of custom shops including trade show exhibit designers Delphi Productions, where he established a metalworking shop. He then worked for six years with renowned master smith Toby Hickman at Waylan Smithy in Petaluma, California. When Hickman retired in 2002, Sticpewich set up his own shop, Protean Steel. He works with Bay Area artists, designers, and homeowners to create custom metalwork of all varieties.
